Messy Fun at Rose Fair

Messy Church set up outside the Queen Mary Centre during the big Saturday Rose Fair event last week. A craft gazebo and bouncy castle were on offer as well as a puppet show. Despite the torrential showers that most managed to dodge, the event was a success and saw many new connections made with many good conversations about Messy Church. The puppet show was a huge success, performing to an audience of about 60 people who were all quite receptive to the gospel message and Bible stories and sings being performed.

Thank you to everyone who helped in any way. If we met you for the first time at the Rose Fair - we hoe you had fun and we look forward to seeing you at Messy Church in September.

Friday 1st July sees our After Hours Live 'Rose Fair Special' featuring the brilliant Salt Of The Sound.

Salt Of The Sound is the award-winning musical collaboration of husband and wife duo Anita and Ben Tatlow. Their aim is to create songs that encourage spiritual reflection both in church environments and in times of personal quiet, while also exploring musical styles and expressions that bring a freshness to the Christian music scene. Songs by Salt Of The Sound have been widely featured on BBC radio and Swedish national TV - and in May 2015, the duo were awarded the "Best Music" accolade at The Attic Film Festival.

The King's Church at Wisbech Rose Fair 2014

 

Henry Olonga sings at After Hours Live

We have had a busy, but productive weekend! The annual Wisbech Rose Fair was back again and The King's Church, Wisbech was more involved than ever! 

 

It began on Friday 4th July 2014 with our monthly After Hours Live event moving to the larger venue of the Queen Mary Centre. Here, an audience of around 60 people enjoyed listening to the singing and life stories of retired international test cricketer Henry Olonga. The usual After Hours Live standard of excellence was surpassed by Henry's exquisite singing. It was thoroughly enjoyed by all who came.

The following day saw the church gearing up for the Rose Fair parades. The Queen Mary Centre was open and teas and coffees were on sale for all those involved with the floats - this was manned by members from the church. At the same time there was a craft fair inside the Queen Mary Centre with many from the church having a stall as well as being organised together with the Ferry Project.

 

Our presence in the market place was wuite literally a 'present' this year! We hosted one of Stop The Traffik's UN.GIFT Boxes that catches the eye and helps to raise awareness about the problem of human trafficking. This is a problem in the Wisbech and Fenland area especially when it comes to the exploitation of labourers from foreign countries. Many meaningful conversations took place with hundreds of leaflets being given out, helping people to identify the signs of human trafficking as well as phone numbers to call if they spot something. 

 

Apart from being exhausted, we are really happy that wer were able to take part in the Rose Fair again and pray that we have made a positive impact on our community. Thank you to all those who gave their time and energy to help make all the various events a success!

Don't Miss These Wisbech Rose Fair 2014 Events!

An Evening With Henry Olonga

 

Retired international test cricketer, henry Olonga will be paying a special visit to Wisbech on Friday 4th July 2014 at the Queen Mary Centre. He will be appearing as the 'After Hours Live' special guest and will be telling stories about his cricketing career and life as well as singing some amazing songs with his superb tenor voice. He will also be answering some questions from the audience as well as signing autographs.

 

Octavia's Cafe will be on hand to provide refreshments and delicious cakes. The evening will be relaxed, seated around tables in an informal 'cafe-style' atmosphere. Henry's book and CD will also be on sale at the event.

 

Entry is free, but come early to get a good seat! Doors open at 7pm with the event starting at 7:30pm.

 

Visit the Gift Box in the Market Place

 

Saturday 5th July 2014 is the Wisbech Rose Fair parade day. Come along to Wisbech Market Place and visit our 'Gift Box'. These boxes were used in London during the 2012 Olympic Games and there are also some currently being used at the World Cup in Rio right now!

 

They are sure to draw a crowd and create interest - so don't miss out! The boxes contain a serious message that is well worth thinking about as it impacts our community in Wisbech as well as other Fenland towns.

The Gift Box will be up in Wisbech Market Place until 4pm on Saturday. First parade starts at 11am.



Rally Car in Wisbech Market Place

The Christian Motor Sport Team team-up with The King's Church, Wisbech in Wisbech Market Place during 2013 Rose Fair Festival

 

A gloriously hot and sunny day greeted Paul Harvey from the Christian Motorsport Team and the gang from The King's Church, Wisbech. It was the Saturday of the Wisbech annual Rose Fair Festival. At 7am, the team were up and rearing to go, setting up the stand (complete with rally car) in Wisbech Market Place.

 

Once the stand was set up and the crowds descended for Wisbech's 50th annual Rose Fair many people stopped and had a look at the car, taking photos as well as being allowed to sit inside it and being able to chat with the driver. Many leaflets that explain how rally driving is like living a Christian life (including the gospel message) were taken by onlookers and passers by, as well as 1500 leaflets inviting people to come and get a 'taste' of what The King's Church, Wisbech is all about.

 

It was a fantastic opportunity for the church to get involved with the Rose Fair and made a big impact. It is very important for the church to be seen and to be heard, especially at events like this and this stand certainly achieved these aims.

Paul Kerensa at After Hours Live

Comedian Paul Kerensa entertains at After Hours Live

Professional stand-up comedian, Paul Kerensa, visited Wisbech on his book tour. He has won comedy awards on ITV as well as helped to write hit sitcoms such as 'Dead Ringers' and  BBC's 'Miranda'. It was fantastic having someone of Paul's calibre visiting our lovely town.

Paul had the audience in stitches in no time! A great night of fun and hilarity was had by all. Octavia's Café in the grand Octavia View building that is managed and run by the Ferry Project, again played host to After Hours Live, with help from The King's Church, Wisbech who funded and co-hosted the event.

This event formed a part of The King's Church, Wisbech's involvement in the annual Wisbech Rose Fair festival. Other churches in the town have fabulous floral displays in their buildings, but The King's Church has stand-up comedy and a rally car instead (see next blog for more about the rally car!)

After Hours usually happens on the first Friday evening of every month, however with the long summer holiday happening over August and many people going away during that time, After Hours takes a well deserved rest as well! Our 2013 Wisbech Rose Fair Events

The Wisbech Rose Fair is an annual event that sees thousands of people coming to Wisbech over the course of five days in July. The event culminates on the Saturday with a wide variety of market stalls, flower displays, and a parade through the town with festive floats. Visit the Rose Fair website here.
This year the Wisbech Rose Fair is happening from Wednesday 3rd July until Sunday 7th July 2013 - and The King's Church, Wisbech is going to be there!

Friday 5th July 2013

Stand-up comedian Paul Kerensa will be coming to Wisbech on his book tour. He will be visiting us at our After Hours Live event that takes place at Octavia View Cafe from 7pm. This will be stand-up comedy at its best complete with fantastic cups of coffee and tea and delicious cake! Paul has been featured on TV as well as radio all around teh UK. He is also a sitcom writer including BBC1's 'Miranda' and 'Not Going Out'. Come along and join in the fun! Visit the After Hours Live website for more information.

Saturday 6th July 2013

Come and visit our stand in the Wisbech Market Place. This year we have teamed up with the 'Alpha & Omega Christian Motorsport Team'. They will be in town with their rally car which will be on display in the Market Place on Saturday 6th July. Come along to chat the the motorsport team as well as meet some people from our church to find out more about Jesus and what our church can do for you!

Sunday 7th July 2013

You may have been given one of our invitations before or during the Rose Fair invitig you to our special 'A Taste of Church' service. We are meeting in the Queen Mary Centre from 10:30am. We will finish at 12:15pm but you are more than welcome to drop-in and drop-out of the event at any time. During the event we will give a taste of what one of our church services is like as well as tell you about various courses and activities that we provide that can help you in your everyday life. Kids are more than welcome. Refreshments will be provided.
