Wisbech Buskers to play After Hours Live

Contrary to a previously advertised date, After Hours Live will now be taking place on Friday 21st October we welcome The Wisbech Buskers to the After Hours Live stage. The Wisbech Buskers are Jacob Keet (violin), Clive Butcher (accordian) and Alan Vibes (Cello). Having met in the Fenland town of Wisbech, they discovered their passion for acoustic folk music. They formed as a group for a special concert that Jacob had organised and people were so impressed that they were booked for an After Hours Live session of their own! Come along to hear some great folk and classical music tinged with fun and frolicks and a twist of faith. 

After Hours Live takes place in Octavia’s Café, that is operated by The Ferry Project. This means every cup of tea, every mug of coffee, every slice of delicious cake purchased goes to the charity, helping those who are homeless in our community. Homeless Sunday

This week we celebrated Homeless Sunday during our morning service. As well as learning more about the work of our local homeless charity the Ferry Project, lead by one of our Elder's. Keith Smith, we were also fortunate enough to hear John's story.

Two members of our church congregation were interviewed recently by BBC Radio Cambridgeshire about how the church has been involved in the set-up and development of the Ferry Project and how they have helped the lives of many homeless and vulnerable people.

Mike Forrest, and elder of The King's Church Wisbech and Chairman of The Ferry Project tells of how the Ferry Project began by various local churches 'catching the vision' and helping to set up the organisation. He also reads part of the Bible that helps to tie the interview in to the advent theme.

Terry Wood tells of how the Ferry Project helped him to escape a life of drugs and crime. He now works for the organisation and also attends The King's Church Wisbech.

Paul Kerensa at After Hours Live

Comedian Paul Kerensa entertains at After Hours Live

Professional stand-up comedian, Paul Kerensa, visited Wisbech on his book tour. He has won comedy awards on ITV as well as helped to write hit sitcoms such as 'Dead Ringers' and  BBC's 'Miranda'. It was fantastic having someone of Paul's calibre visiting our lovely town.

Paul had the audience in stitches in no time! A great night of fun and hilarity was had by all. Octavia's Café in the grand Octavia View building that is managed and run by the Ferry Project, again played host to After Hours Live, with help from The King's Church, Wisbech who funded and co-hosted the event.

This event formed a part of The King's Church, Wisbech's involvement in the annual Wisbech Rose Fair festival. Other churches in the town have fabulous floral displays in their buildings, but The King's Church has stand-up comedy and a rally car instead (see next blog for more about the rally car!)

After Hours usually happens on the first Friday evening of every month, however with the long summer holiday happening over August and many people going away during that time, After Hours takes a well deserved rest as well! We will be back in September, so please do keep checking our website for more information nearer the time as we would love to see you there!

Carol Service

 

On Friday The Ferry Project, The King's Church Wisbech and After Hours Live joined forces to host a fabulously festive carol service. It was originally planned to be an outdoors event, singing carols under the stars, however as the rain was bucketing down the venue was changed to indoors and once again the beautiful Octavia's Cafe was used.

 

With over 60 people in attendance, the musicians did a fine job playing some Christmas favourites such as 'In The Bleak Midwinter', 'Silent Night' and 'Hark The Herald Angels Sing'. There were some special guests and some surprises too. A couple of extremely talented pupils from the Thomas Clarkson Academy sung some solos, Verity McChlery and Greg Smith sung a lovely duet and the Ferry Project surprised everyone with their choir!

 

Tasty nibbles and christmas treats were available and enjoyed by all.

 

Thanks to everyone who participated and to those who came along to enjoy the evening with us. A very special thank you to the Ferry Project for their hard work and fantastic venue.
